For 2005/2006 Emmanuel have taken on 3 interns – Laura Gregg, Grant Martin and Joy Watson - who will be involved in various ministries within the church. The work taken on varies from week to week, as well as working on projects which go on all year long.
Working through school work will play a significant part of the year. Doors have opened to allow us to get involved within the local schools to do SU and outreach work. Our aim is to give them hope and opportunity, and make the gospel message clear and about where we stand.
Our interns will be also be dedicating part of their time developing the ‘glo' idea, working along side several other volunteers from other churches in Lurgan.
What is glo? – It is not a structured event or meeting – it is more a concept geared to help the lost better understand Jesus' love. It's about showing people that Christianity is not about acting a certain way, or complicating the gospel as is so common in today's society; but to keep Christianity simple – and get the lost to a place where they realise that what we have got is something they need too. A ‘gloer's' energy is focused on anyone who needs to know Jesus' love. It's about going into the community and showing love practically – by cutting lawns, painting walls – whatever the needs of the people are. Particular focus is dedicated to getting involved with the young people on the streets – they stand drinking on street corners as frustrated for themselves as we are for them. We want to see them get the opportunity to make more of their lives, something they so often think is beyond possible. We try to involve the young people in our normal lives, when we get together to watch a DVD, we bring those from the street round too.
"I want to see those on the streets saved, and then discipled. My desire is for those who spend their weekends in the park drinking to see they need more in their lives." - Grant Martin
One day a week will be set aside for ‘personal development'. Our interns will gather with interns from CFC in Belfast , where during the year they will complete a discipleship course, and use this time to grow personally, concentrating on their own hearts and minds.
Please remember to pray for our interns – they have taken a brave step to devote themselves to the work of the church. Pray for:
The work in the schools, they will have an impact and doors will open
Financial support, be able to raise money to take the young people away
Pray for salvation, and that those saved will be disciples
Unity within church and that they will grow in God
"My goal – main aim is to have a real relationship with the young people in the town and through the schools. I want them to see us as real, not bible bashers, and see what we have is something that they need. I do want to see salvation, but I realise a relationship needs to be there first. Also unity in the town and churches. Pray I don't forget my medical knowledge!" – Joy Watson
