Breaking rules or cheating on a Lover

Came across a line the other day that i can't get out of my head.
'It is a very different thing to break a rule than to cheat on a lover.'
Why is it we so often live our lives in fear of breaking one of God's rules, as opposed to breaking the heart of the Lover of our souls. I think the former kind of mindset is one which sums up much of the evangelical understanding of God in Northern Ireland. It is one that we need to shake, a stronghold of the mind that needs to be shattered because quite frankly i think that it hurts the heart of God. I am not saying rules, or better, boundaries are not important. They are and we all need them. But surely our motivation as Christians is rooted in the love of Jesus, that God desires would capture our hearts so that our response to Him is out of love, aided by His Spirit. If it's not, i have to conclude, i think we are missing the point. God is not up there counting our rights and wrongs to see what score we can accumlate. Rather God is a Father who gets incredible deep joy from His sons and daughters who obey Him because they are infatuated with His son Jesus, and on the other hand, He is a God who is incredibly grieved when they choose to flirt with other gods and seek that love in other places. It's not about keep rules, ticking boxes or following formulas, it is about passionatley, obsessively, undeniably and dangerously loving Jesus.

  • 2 John 1:16 'And this is love that we walk according to his commandments' - God's commandments flow from his love; and so obedience is an easy yoke to bear if obedience rests upon faith that God IS love.

  • Ola Senoir Al,
Its like the verse of that song thats been in my head for ages. "How can hearts not love your name, How can souls not sing your praise?" I've been caught by a wave of worship lately and I wanna keep gunning for Jesus. Hope all's well pal, keep up the good work here!!

    Love ya

  • totally agree with you alain. Just discovered ur blog. Sometimes I think people forget that all sin is bad too, there isn't any one that is any worse in God's eyes than any others. That is a human perception. God searches our hearts-the source of our obedience -not our ability to keep up appearances. Hey i have a blog too. Can't remember how to add u as a link though.

  • Ur right alain. If we could just get it into our heads that there is nothing we could do to make God love us any more and there is nothing we could do that would make Him love us any less than He does right now! SS.
